Assessing Need for a Corrosion Control Evaluation (EL286)

Course Description: Active management of the corrosivity of drinking water (i.e., corrosion control) has long been used to prevent harmful levels of lead, copper, and other metals being released into drinking water as well as protect the function of pipes and appurtenances. This course begins by explaining the importance and history of corrosion control treatment. It goes on to illustrate how managing corrosion control and changes in corrosion control require informed decision-making and presents a framework for both ongoing oversight of corrosion control practice and when changes in source or treatment are likely to warrant a corrosion control evaluation. Evaluating corrosion control performance or impacts entails collecting and organizing the correct information in a manner that supports selection of or modification of corrosion control treatment. The course addresses key data streams, organization of those data, what new data may be needed to support decision making and introduces approaches to collecting needed data. Importantly, the course points out instances where failing to collect data correctly or not understanding the information that is available can lead to errors in decision-making.

Module 2: Data To Collect To Support Decisions
Module 3: How To Analyze Data To Support CCT Decisions
Module 4: When Is It Appropriate To Initiate Or Revisit CCT?
Learning Objectives:
• Explain the context for applying Corrosion Control Treatment (CCT).
• Identify what data are needed to support CCT decisions and where data gaps exist.
• Describe key considerations and techniques for analyzing data.
• Determine when it is appropriate to initiate or revisit CCT.
• Recognize source or treatment changes that are likely to warrant a CCT evaluation.
• Identify possible water quality impacts as they relate to CCT that could results due to a change in source or treatment .
• Decide which corrosion control studies are appropriate for evaluating CCT.
Prerequisite/Background: Please note that the course Assessing Need for a Corrosion Control Evaluation (EL286) assumes a basic knowledge of water chemistry. If needed, we encourage you to pair EL286 with AWWA’s EL228 – Basic Math & Chemistry eLearning course for a water chemistry refresher.
This course, the second in the AWWA-ASDWA Corrosion Control Certificate Program, will help the learner explore aspects of corrosion control theory that can be used to select and test Corrosion Control Treatment (CCT) that best minimizes the release of lead and copper from distribution system and premise plumbing materials.
